She spoke to PEOPLE and offered her top five tips for navigating menopause and aging

Five years ago Tamsen Fadal, then a local New York City television anchor, was told that if she kept talking about menopause on social media, it would “ruin your career.” But the opposite happened.

With an audience of 3 million followers, she became a leading advocate for raising awareness about menopause. “I spent 30 years on television, and this is the biggest story I’ve ever told,” says Fadal, 54.

Here, her most “doable” tips for managing life with menopause.

Find Your Routine

I don’t want a wellness list that’s so long it makes me feel unwell! So I do these six things daily: I take vitamin D for bones and magnesium for sleep. I do crossword puzzles for brain health, walk a minimum of 7,000 steps, breath work to decrease stress, dry brushing to help circulation, and tongue scraping [the U-shaped tool costs $5] to get rid of bacteria and freshen breath.

Consider Hormone Therapy

There’s new data to support that hormone replacement therapy is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. I have an estrogen patch, I take progesterone — and I use a drop of testosterone gel (the size of a pencil eraser top) and vaginal estrogen for low libido. Talk to your doctor about what might work for you.

Take Your Time

Painful sex is the last thing you want. And as we age, it can take longer to get aroused. Slower is better. Erotic touching, cuddling and massage are wonderful. Vaginal estrogen and lubricant can be a game changer. And have the conversation with your partner. I brought my husband to a sex shop, and we picked out a vibrator together.

Brighten Your Style

I love a stretch waistline. I wear a lot of jumpsuits and pantsuits in bold colors — which look good even when my belly is bloated. My shoe size grew by a half inch, so now I wear kitten heels, ballet flats and fun sneakers. Give yourself permission.

Embrace the Change

Menopause is so intertwined with ageism. Women often feel like it’s the beginning of the end versus the beginning of a new season. These days it’s considered dinner party conversation—and that’s the kind of change we need.
